Yogi Brahmasamhara

Yogi Brahmasamhara (Brahm) has practised Authentic Meditation for more than 37 years. He was born in Griffith NSW. He grew up on a large property west of Hillston– sheep and wheat country.

School was a one-teacher school on the property. The only activities Brahm knew as a child were learning to shoot and drive before the age of 11 and the fascination of the Hillston Library on the Saturday trek to town.

His father took the family and left the farm to become a Minister with the Uniting Church when Brahm was 16.

Brahm spent three years at 2RG Griffith as a radio announcer and then Branch station Manager before going back to farming on a neighbour’s property for a year.

He left to come to Sydney to study theology and to become a Uniting Church Minister. During that time he met Misra Bashayandeh an Indian Yogi, also then studying at university. He began the practice of meditation with him. Meeting Bashayandeh gradually shifted his intended ‘spiritual path’ away from formal religion to exploring and studying the ‘enthralling profundity’ of meditation. Later, it was his Zen Master, Suni Kaisan who sent him into the world ‘to experience life to prepare him’ for teaching, to understand life.

He did just that, working in various fields. He taught English Language and Literature at the University of New South Wales; produced some 30 documentaries on Australian artists; tasted the corporate world with a three-year stint in ESSO and then established his own, award winning graphic design company. During that time, he co-authored a book on William Balmain (with Dr Peter Reynolds) and wrote poetry prolifically. He also spent much of his time competing around Australia as a motor racing driver - which he describes as ‘an extremely meditative activity’. He is the father of five children.

In the mid ‘90s, he turned to teaching meditation as his Teacher had foretold and, today, the Meditation Sanctuary which he established in an inner-city suburb in Sydney, Australia, in 2001 attracts hundreds of students each year. Teachers from the Sanctuary are now establishing further Sanctuaries in Sydney, with two more at Carlingford and Epping, with plans for North Shore and Eastern Suburbs. The rise in popularity of Authentic Meditation means that the Meditation Sanctuary is considering expanding to other cities in Australia.
